Celebrex
Celebrex (Celecoxib) is a "Cox- 2 inhibitor" that was approved by the US Food
and Drug Administration (FDA) on December 31, 1998 for the treatment of rheumatoid
arthritis and osteo-arthritis.
An article published in August, 2001 in the JAMA (Journal of the American Medical
Association) raised concerns over the possible impact on cardiovascular health.
In September, 2001 the American Heart Association, the National Stroke Association
and the Arthritis Foundation asked Celebrex' manufacturer (Pharmacia Corp.) to
test whether Celebrex increases the risk of heart attack and stroke.
In addition, the FDA sent Pharmacia a "Warning Letter" on February
1, 2001. The warning letter, among other things, required Pharmacia to cease
certain promotional activities relating to Celebrex.
