Neurontin
Neurontin, the brand name for gabapentin , was approved by the FDA as an oral medication for management of postherpetic neuralgia (PHN). PHN is the pain that follows a bout of shingles. Neurontin was also FDA approved for use in controlling epileptic seizures in conjunction with another drug. Shortly following its release in the early 1990s, Neurontin was being aggressively marketed for the treatment of a number of “off-label” uses, as well. “Off-label” marketing refers to the promotion of a drug for uses not approved by the FDA and is illegal. The “off-label” marketing of Neurontin has included treatment for the following:
- Bipolar mental disorder
- Pain disorders
- Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS / Lou Gehrig’s Disease)
- Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD)
- Migraines
- Drug and alcohol withdrawal seizures
- Restless leg syndrome
- Monotherapy treatment for epilepsy
In May 2004, Pfizer pled guilty to the charges and settled charges of “off-label” marketing. However, their misrepresentation of Neurontin’s viable uses may have caused patients to suffer additional adverse side effects. Patient litigation against Pfizer is imminent and justified.
