Prempro is a hormone replacement
therapy (HRT) drug. It is a combination of two naturally occurring
hormones - estrogen and progestin. Prempro's was intended to
reduce symptoms of menopause and to reduce incidents of osteoporosis.
A recent national study on the risks and benefits of Hormone Replacement Therapy
(HRT) for women was abandoned after the initial results showed a significantly
increased risk of significant health problems in the participants. The initial
results of the study, which included approximately 16,000 women between the ages
of 50 and 79, revealed the following:
26% increase in breast cancer
41% increase in strokes
100% increase in blood clots
22% increase in incidents of cardiovascular disease
On May 28, 2003, the Wall Street
Journal reported that a new study revealed that "Prempro
doubled the risk of dementia in women over 65."
