On September 30, 2004, Merck & Company announced they would voluntarily withdraw their popular arthritis pain relief drug, Vioxx. Merck’s decision followed the release of a recent study indicating that those using Vioxx for 18 months or more were at twice the risk for heart attack and stroke. Despite the medical community’s concerns that Vioxx had potentially severe side effects, Merck had maintained that Vioxx was safe. Merck's insistence on the safety of Vioxx put thousands of people at higher risk of heart attacks and strokes as well as other serious side effects.
On November 1, 2004, the Wall Street Journal reported that Merck knew of the problems with Vioxx much earlier. A combination of internal e-mails from company executives as well as interviews with scientists outside of Merck indicate that the company tried for years to downplay the safety concerns of Vioxx and the serious cardiovascular side effects.
