To Cunningham & Mears, Community Matters

When we opened up Cunningham & Mears in 1996, we did so because we wanted the people of Oklahoma to have a place they could go when they were hurt. We wanted our friends and communities to know that we would be on their side when they needed help.

That support extends past our professional services, too. After all, good citizenship starts at home, and we believe that supporting our communities is our duty as Oklahomans. Today, we want to tell you about some incredible programs we help to support.

Britton Christian Church Tennis Academy

The Britton Christian Church Tennis Academy was founded in 2011. At its start, there were maybe a dozen or so students who wanted to learn to play; over the last 7 years, however, the program expanded enough to add an annual summer camp (65 students last year, and counting!), and now offers close to 100 unique opportunities to players. The team has competed in city and statewide competitions, and has won a number of them. In fact, in both 2017 and 2018, the BCC Cheetahs won the Oklahoma City 10-and-Under Championships – and haven’t lost a dual yet.

This particular organization is near and dear to our hearts. Ryan Cunningham’s wife, Vanesa, was a college tennis player. For the last seven years she has donated her time to BCC Tennis Academy to help teach and give an opportunity to underprivileged children to learn the game. Last month, we were made aware of a fundraising effort to build dedicated tennis courts for the BCC Tennis Academy in their community as the next step in helping these kids through tennis. To help them reach this goal, the Firm donated $1,000.00 to the cause.

Moore High School’s Pom squad

We are proud supports of local schools, and Moore High School is no exception. This year, the members of MHS Pom worked harder than ever, and made it to the DTU Nationals competition for 2019. Their hard work isn’t over yet, though, because it’s going to cost about $1200 per student athlete to attend the competition.

We learned about the MHS Pom squad’s work through Shannon, a legal assistant at Cunningham & Mears, who has a daughter on the team. We were presented with the opportunity to help sponsor the team’s trip to Florida, and decided immediately that we wanted to help. After all, the team worked hard to earn that spot; they should be able to compete. We are proud to help support the Moore High School Pom squad’s mission to bring home the gold from Orland this year! Check out this video clip of the 2017 team, getting the crowd psyched up for the game.

At Cunningham & Mears, we are proud to help support the programs that make our communities stronger. If you can, we encourage you to support MHS Pom’s trip, and the BCC Tennis Academy’s goal to build new courts for the students.
